Obama: Folks Need A Degree

Obama truly has no idea how the real world works Via ABC:

The president said, “A high school diploma is not going to be enough. Folks need a college degree. They need workforce training. They need a higher education. And so today I want to talk about the higher education strategy that we’re pursuing not only to lead the world once more in college graduation rates, but to make sure our graduates are ready for a career; ready to meet the challenges of a 21st century economy. “

What Obama and the liberals will create is a type of credential inflation (as opposed to monetary inflation) where an increasing number of college graduates will be chasing a finite number of jobs. This will cause many employers to require a college degree needlessly for jobs that at one time did not require a degree. Furthermore, employers will start requiring Masters for jobs that today only Bachelor’s Degree.

Of course, if Obama’s plan is realized, the real winner in all this will be the Colleges who will see a surge in enrollment and a nice profit.

Education is important. However, a college degree will not determine if you are a success or a failure. Hard work, perseverance, risk taking and creativity are keys the keys to success. Just take a look at this abbreviated list of very successful people who never attended, or dropped out of, college: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Paul Allen, Mark Twain. Richard Branson, Warren Buffet, Ted Turner, Harry Truman, Mark Zuckerberg, Ray Bradbury, The Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, David Oreck, Michael Dell and Richard DeVos.

CNN: The Solution To Rising Number Of Electrical Blackouts Is Not Increasing Power Supply

Talk about lowering our living standards. In a recent article from the eco-green-liberals at CNN, our nation is seeing an increasing number of electrical blackouts. Not due to severe weather, but due to increased demand for electricity.

Predictably the solution CNN advocates is regulating (reducing) consumption through a ‘smart grid’ and not the increase of our electrical our generating capacity:

In a nutshell, a smart grid is an automated electricity system that improves the reliability, security and efficiency of electric power. It more easily connects with new energy sources, such as wind and solar, and is designed to charge electric vehicles and control home appliances via a so-called “smart” devices. (emphasis added)

Solar power (the photovoltaic principle) is a Victorian era discovery that 171 years later is not commercially viable. Windmills have been around for hundreds of years and they still can’t generate large scale electricity and has not replaced a single coal power plant anywhere in the world. However, faced with these facts, liberals continue the charade that green energy actually works.

In  TX, Austin Energy controls the thermostats of nearly 100K customer volunteer:

Austin Energy’s Smart Grid 2.0 is already in the works. We already manage 86,000 smart thermostats in homes and businesses, which at peak times can aggregate to about 90 MW of load. It will be interactive and “self-healing,” and will:

* Manage distributed generation—for example, solar photovoltaic and micro wind

* Build and manage energy storage

* Power and communicate with smart consumer appliances

* Charge plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles

Power rationing is the end result for all of us if liberals get their way. Regardless if we are willing to pay for the electricity or not, the regulators will decide when they will cut the electrical power to any smart appliance installed in our homes.

Early estimates for the cost of such a smart grid system is $1.5 trillion that will be diverted from adding value in our economy to regulating, reducing and creating an economic drag within our economy . Of course, advocates of the smart grid claim that the money spent on the smart grid will “create jobs” much like every other ridiculous green energy project that has been rolled out over the years.

One of the best things that can happen in our economy is the construction more coal and nuclear power plants. This will create actual jobs, eliminate blackouts, cut everyone’s electricity bills, and reduce businesses costs across the board. Furthermore, we have an abundance of coal that needs mining and shipping to power-plants across the country.

An Alternative To Rick Snyder For Michigan’s Next Governor

Ken Proctor* of the Libertarian party on his philosophy:

Unfortunately, over the past several years our freedoms have been under attack. Government bailouts of a selected few “too big to fail” companies and preferential treatment of certain industries and politically-powerful groups violate every principle the Founding Fathers stood for. I, and the other candidates running on the Libertarian Party ticket, are determined to reverse these trends. Our government should NOT be picking winners and losers in our economy and American life. It SHOULD guarantee equal opportunities for all people, groups and businesses to grow and prosper, and then get out of the way. To do this we must work together to change the face of American politics.

Over the past several years Michigan has offered hundreds of millions of dollars in incentives and subsidies to trendy “green energy” companies and the film industry. Democrats and Republicans joined to enact a new Michigan Business Tax, and a steep surcharge on that tax, to dramatically increase the taxes paid by most businesses across Michigan, while dramatically decreasing the taxes paid by the politically powerful Big Three automakers. They also diverted federal “stimulus” money to guarantee the jobs of politically powerful state employee unions, rather than create more private jobs. Bringing new businesses to Michigan is great, but not when the companies are lured by government incentives that do not require the companies to be profitable to survive. Witness the steep job cuts by the ethanol and solar power manufacturers lured to Michigan by those incentives. That money was foolishly spent.

Michigan has been cutting deals with large corporations in “cool” industries but over-taxing and over-regulating the small businesses, the true heart of Michigan’s economy, to the point where the owners close their doors and leave for greener pastures. They flee to Texas, Florida or other states where there is no Michigan Business Tax, no personal income tax, and new employees can’t be required to join a union as a condition of employment.

He has a much more conservative Platform than Rick and his green energy and cool cities, Granholm lite agenda.

*I will keep researching Ken Proctor and keep a sharp eye on Rick Snyder as we get closer to november 2nd.

How bad are the climate models?

The observations as a group exhibit a significant trend of 0.110 C per decade, compared to a model trend of 0.272 C decade. In the MT layer the model trend was 0.253 C decade remains significant but the mean observed trend is a statistically insignificant 0.057 C per decade. So much for the ‘hotspot’, the models exaggerate warming X2 in the lower troposphere and X4 in the middle troposphere.

I would say very weak.

All I can say is this is taking the green thing way too far…. The human waste powered VW Beetle

Great minds think alike….Pesky! Ship find shows present Arctic Sea Ice conditions similar to 1853

Interesting that the ship was lost in 1853, right at the end of the Little Ice Age, and coincidentally just 3 years after the start of the HADCRU global temperature record, from which we are led to believe the earth has warmed about 0.7C. If we are seeing “unprecedented” global temperatures and changes in Arctic sea ice, how did the HMS Investigator get this far north at the end of the Little Ice Age?

San Francisco Discovers Supply And Demand

San Francisco rolls out new ‘smart’ parking meters that adjust their rates according to the supply and demand:

SFpark works by collecting and distributing real-time information about where parking is available so drivers can quickly find open spaces.

To help achieve the right level of parking availability, SFpark will periodically adjust meter pricing up and down to match demand. Demand-responsive pricing encourages drivers to park in underused areas and garages, reducing demand in overused areas. With SFpark, real-time data and demand-responsive pricing work together to readjust parking patterns in the City so that parking is easier to find.

You know, this whole free market / supply and demand thing could really catch on.

BTW… The scouts are booing Obama. He is not cool (that is so 2008) and Obama is not exactly a poster child for the Boy Scouts.

Scary Unemployment Graphs

Via Calculated Risk:

The underlying details of the employment report were mixed. The positives: a slgiht increase in hours worked and in hourly wages, and the slight decreases in part time workers (for economic reasons) and in the long term unemployed.

The negatives include the weak hiring of only 12,000 ex-Census, the declines in the participation rate and employment-population rate, and the significant downward revision to the June employment report.

Overall this was a weak report.

The graphs show a scary picture:

Note what happens in 2007.

Big spending liberal Democrats seized both chambers of congress… and unemployment started to rise.
