Progressive Left: Eliminating Electoral College Will Reduce Ability To Elect A Republican President

The process of election affords a moral certainty, that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications. Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity, may alone suffice to elevate a man to the first honors in a single State; but it will require other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the esteem and confidence of the whole Union, or of so considerable a portion of it as would be necessary to make him a successful candidate for the distinguished office of President of the United States

Alexander Hamilton, Federalist No. 68

The move to eliminate the electoral college has been in motion for a long time and has been picking up recently. Here is an article on the HuffyPost from 2007 where the author comes out a bluntly states the reason the progressive lefts want to abolish the electoral college:

Bottom line, it could reduce the GOPs ability to elect a Republican President. And since Republicans control a large number of small population states, it would be difficult to get it passed by the senate and then ratified by the requisite number of states. (emphasis added).

The progressive left wants to reduce the ability of conservatives to elect a President. It is not about fairness or giving all people more say in the Federal government.

Imagine What Detroit Would Be Like Without The Clout Of One Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-MI)

This article in the Detroit News astounded me.

And to think what Detroit would be like without the clout of one Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.

The Day After: Rick Snyder Round-Up

Many conservative bloggers across the state are, to put it mildly, less than enthusiastic about the way Michigan’s gubernatorial primaries shook out on the Republican side:

  • The BlogProf: Michigan gubernatorial election to be between a douche (R) and a turd sandwich (D). Or how Democrats shot themselves in foot by picking Bernero, while the GOP shot themselves in the foot by picking Snyder
  • Republican Michigander posting @ RightMichigan: I’ll be blunt. Snyder won. This sucks. This isn’t surprising either.
  • Anna Lambert @ Michigan Taxes Too Much: With the victory of Rick Snyder as the “Republican” candidate comes the disgusting situation of having the choice between the honest Liberal who admits he’s a Democrat (Bernero) and the Democrat who wears a Republican name tag (Snyder).
  • KG One @ RightMichigan: Snyder- Wishy-washy, debate avoiding, questionnaire squelching, self-proclaimed “nerd” (nerd king) who will use his business acumen gleaned from running Gateway into the ground and his philanthropic endeavors around A^2 to “fix” Michigan.
  • I’m not really happy with the idea of Snyder as the alternative to the “Angriest Mayor In America” either. I mean, the Rick Snyder platform has lifted pages straight out of the failed Jennifer Granholm’s agenda:

Rick Snyder is the right leader to help protect the environment while growing the economy. As a member of the board of trustees of the Michigan Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Rick has gained great insight into the issues facing Michigan and the role that the state should play in the Great Lakes Region. As an entrepreneur, Rick understands how to quickly and efficiently transfer technology from the classroom to the marketplace, which will help protect Michigan’s environment and create “green collar” jobs.

    Green collar jobs? Seriously?

Rick also is bringing back the super popular Granholm initiative from her first term. Cool cities.

Jobs and vibrant cities are critical to keeping youth in Michigan. The first priority for state government to help keep youth in Michigan is to create the best environment for young people to find jobs and an exciting living environment. A business friendly and globally competitive Michigan will provide the career opportunities young workers desire. Cities should offer youth leadership roles so they can help shape their growth and uniqueness.

If Rick is going to model is platform on a current governor, use more Chris Christie and less Jennifer Granholm.

    Primary Day Quick Hits

Normally my Tuesdays are really busy. This one has been busier than normal.

Something I missed was the recent 30th anniversary of one of the all time funniest  movies. Caddyshack. Here are a few fun facts from Movifone:

    • Like the character of Danny Noonan, the eldest Murray brother, Ed, actually won a caddie scholarship. The Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship helped pay his way through Northwestern University.
    • Carl Spackler was based on a police officer/shell-shocked veteran that Harold Ramis knew.
    • After playing cigarette-smoking tough guy Tony, Scott Colomby actually became addicted to the habit.
    • Caddyshack’ was Dangerfield’s first major movie role
    • , and despite his years as a hilarious stand-up, he was nervous about his performance; he constantly asked co-star Cindy Morgan if he was doing okay.

The group was formed to commemorate Reagan’s 100th birthday on Feb. 6.

Tree Hugger Paradise: Clip on room that offers worm farm, rainwater tank, an outdoor space and an enclosed room

    The clip on ‘plant room’:

The Plant Room is intended as a prefabricated room that bolts-on to a variety of existing apartment types, improving the quality of living, reducing energy and water use, and generally making the building more sustainable.

A Plant Room provides hot water for one occupant and a healthy growing space for herbs, fruit and vegetables all year round. It also offers a worm farm, a rainwater tank, an outdoor space and an enclosed room.

You know, I was just thinking how great it would be to have a worm farm.

Freep Op-Ed Advocates Higher Energy Costs For Everyone Except Low Income Households

It seems ever month or so the Detroit Free Press (Detroit’s more liberal paper) finds an excuse to publish another rambling op-ed pushing the argument for ‘energy reform.’ This month is no different. Today, the Freep asserts that “Energy reform needs a voice.”

The Op-Ed proceeds in rattling off the boiler plate liberal talking points such as global warming (a hoax), fossil fuels are bad, green energy, climate change (fraud), green jobs, tax breaks to help people insulate their homes. They even bring up the (very flawed)  idea of home power generation.

Then, the op-ed veers into environmental justice territory:

A coordinated strategy can take the edge off of increasing energy costs by ensuring that people on fixed incomes and in low-income households get rebates.

The Free Press is advocating that low income people should not share in the increased costs.Obama promised that electricity prices will necessarily skyrocket under his cap and trade plan.

No one should pay more for energy. If the Free Press truly cared for the poor, and not about advancing the Progressive Democrat agenda, they would advocate lower energy costs for everyone, including business, to help create jobs.

Of course this will not happen because environmental movement is not really not about the environment.

Sunday Afternoon Links: 2010 The Year We Make Contact Edition

The President addressed a joint session of Congress yesterday. He said he wasn’t gonna back down on the blockade. I don’t know which was scarier, the speech or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a president is gonna get us into serious trouble, they always use Lincoln.

Quote from 2010 The Year We Make Contact

    Via DVD Town:

As it stands, director Peter Hyams created in “2010″ a good, well-made, tightly-knit, nicely-acted science-fiction sequel, yet one that clearly lacks the vision and scope of its illustrious predecessor. Where “2001″ had been all about imagery, “2010″ is all about plot. Be that as it may, however, “2010″ might be a more appealing proposition than “2001″ for some viewers. The sequel has a more conventional story line, a greater reliance on character relationships, and more matter-of-fact explanations for otherworldly phenomena, which could make it more accessible than “2001,” which relied almost exclusively on images and sound to sustain its ideas. Looked at another way, “2010″ is a good piece of entertainment, while “2001″ is a persuasive work of art.

Intrade odds for Republicans to control the House after the November elections rose today to the highest level in the contract’s history: 58.6% (see chart above). When Obama took office in January 2009, the Intrade odds were only 15% that the Republicans would control the House in 2010, and those odds have consistently risen and have been trading above 50% since late June.
