Nissan Leaf: 116.1 Mile Range If You Are A Green-Footed Driver

Coal Powered Nissan Leaf

Via AutoBlog:

In the end, the Leaf made the trip; that’s 116.1 miles traveled under real-world conditions. The range-testing run utilized around 22.76 kW of the Leaf’s total 24 kWh battery, indicating that it was pushed to the limits. Surprisingly, Chambers claims to have called upon the cool air of the range-depleting A/C system for much of the journey. He also engaged the Leaf’s range-boosting Eco-mode before starting his jaunt, giving us a decent prediction for what a green-footed driver can expect.

Harvard Study Focus On Tea Party Rather Than Economic Failure Of Its Alumni

Via The Blaze:

A survey released Oct. 21 by Harvard University’s Institute of Politics showed that only 11 percent of those 18 to 29 consider themselves supporters of the tea party, and analysts say the leaderless movement’s ties to social conservatism and rhetoric in favor of an earlier America are hampering its appeal.

Despite widespread voter anger ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections, the tea party has been a hard sell to young voters because many equate joining with embracing conservative social values, said Peter Levine, director of CIRCLE, a Tufts University group that conducts research on the political involvement of young Americans. He said this holds true even for those who would otherwise identify with the party’s call for stricter fiscal conservatism.

“A lot of young people, whether it’s from the media, professors or other sources, come to the opinion that the tea party is just a bunch of right-wing extreme radicals, racists — whatever,” said Patrick Kelly, a tea party activist and freshman at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. “That’s the biggest deterrent.”

Maybe Harvard should worry less about why 18 to 29 year old COLLEGE STUDENTS are not lining up to be part of the Tea Party movement and focus more on why their Alumni are an abject failure at economics and are destroying our economy.

Back To The 70′s: Liberal Democrats In Washington Resurrect Stagflation

It’s like the 70′s all over again. Via Kudlow:

It should have been recovery summer, according to the president and his followers. But it is now officially a recovery slump. The entire command-and-control economic philosophy of the Obama Democrats has proven to be a big bust. And they’ll pay a very big price for this.

In fact, the last two GDP reports have averaged less than 2 percent growth, something that qualifies as a growth recession, not a recovery.

Even worse, the GDP deflator — the broadest inflation measure — came in at 2.2 percent in the third quarter, following a 2 percent reading in the second quarter. That means inflation is rising faster than real output. Stagflation.

The Bernanke Fed should take notice of this on the eve of its quantitative-easing pump-priming exercise, expected to be announced the day after the election. We are actually experiencing a mini version of stagflationary growth recession.

The spending, taxing, and regulating policies of the Democratic Congress and administration have blocked growth, putting the Fed in a position to provide even more money to chase fewer goods. But in classic Milton Friedman terms, even though the economy is mired in stagnation, that’s still an inflationary prescription.

What Kudlow describes sounds awfully familiar.

The Carter administration created stagflation, inflation coupled with stagnant GDP growth, when he imposed price controls and implemented large government spending programs:

In desperation, President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) tried to combat economic weakness and unemployment by increasing government spending, and he established voluntary wage and price guidelines to control inflation. Both were largely unsuccessful.

I wonder if we will get the ‘Crisis of Confidence’ speech in 2011 as well.

Saturday Morning Quick Hits: 79 Cafe Racer Edition

Some random perusing this Saturday morning…

79 Harley-Davidson Cafe Racer:

So this ’79 Harley is a departure for shop owner Justin Del Prado: low-set and unpainted, it has more of a café racer look. Del Prado has detailed the process: his latest custom “started out as a stock bike and was torn apart, so all the reusable pieces could be cleaned and detailed. Many parts were discarded to make room for the new setup. I wanted an all-steel café tank rather than fiberglass, and ended up finding the tank on eBay. It’s an Italian Benelli tank and the metal was perfect, so we were able to do a raw steel theme.” Del Prado hand-machined and clear coated the tank, and built the seat pan and rear fairing. “We distressed the finish on the primary and cam covers to give them an aged look, along with any other little parts we could.”

This is one very cool bike.

Liberty 1776 vs. 2010:

What is most important for the future of our country is liberty. Let it erode away enough, and we will eventually cease to exist. It is an issue reaching a critical stage. Those who wish to steal liberty away have done so in a very tempered, measured manner for a very long time. Incrementally doing so ensures that they can mask their true intentions. Usually it is done in time of crisis. We are far more willing to forego certain freedoms under the auspices of safety and security. It could be economically in the form of legislation such as TARP. It could be security in the form of the Patriot Act. We respond to violent criminal acts with the ceding of personal freedom such as gun ownership. If you even question the motives of government under some of the crisis events that have occurred, you are quickly branded a kook or conspiracy theorist. Yet, virtually every major crisis to beset our country has resulted in more liberty being stripped away, and usually voluntarily.

Unions fight to stamp out ugliness

Obama Admin: Currently there is sufficient spare capacity in OPEC to offset a decrease in GOM deepwater production

Yep, Obama’s crew is really comfortable with the idea of further strangling  our domestic Oil production ability.

Why are they comfortable with this idea?

Because OPEC has “sufficient excess production capacity.” According to Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) report (pg. 22):

The impact on domestic deepwater hydrocarbon production as a result of these regulations is expected to be negative, but the size of the impact is not expected to materially impact the world oil markets. The deepwater GOM [Gulf of Mexico] is an oil province and the domestic crude oil prices are set by the world oil markets. Currently there is sufficient spare capacity in OPEC to offset a decrease in GOM deepwater production that could occur as a result of this rule. Therefore, the increase in the price of hydrocarbon products to consumers from the increased cost to drill and operate on the OCS is expected to be minimal. However, more of the oil for domestic consumption may be purchased from overseas markets because the cost of OCS oil and gas production will rise relative to other sources of supply. This shift would contribute negatively to our balance of trade. [Page 22 of the document.]

Vladimir @ Vladimir’s Energy Blog expertly points out the absolute stupidity of this finding:

  • They assume the United States will only be affected only as to the world price of crude oil, not availability and security of supply.
  • To the Administration, it’s OK if we lose domestic production capacity, because OPEC has plenty of oil. [Are you freaking kidding me??!!]
  • “Currently there is sufficient spare capacity in OPEC” only because we are in a monumental, persistent worldwide recession and demand is low. Last time we had a vibrant economy, oil was $140 per barrel. Oil has doubled from $40 to $80 per barrel during Obama’s term, and the economy has been in the toilet the entire time. This is a big, red warning flag and should be of grave concern to anyone who plans to come out of recession some day. Expensive energy could keep it from happening.
  • Energy planning time frames are 10 to 30 years. “Currently” there is excess supply overhanging the market. What about six months from now? What about six years from now?
  • And what about small businesses? The rule goes on to say that they’ll be OK because they will just leave the Gulf for onshore, or better yet, overseas. Just like that, huh? It shows just how foolish and unconnected are the idiots who write this stuff.

As I’ve pointed out many times, energy is the foundation of any functioning economy. The more the progressive left limits our access to reliable and efficient energy sources, the weaker our economy will be, and the longer we will remain in this deep recession.
