What started out as an exercise in model building and photography, ended up as a dream-like reconstruction of the town I grew up in. It’s not an exact recreation, but it does capture the mood of my memories.
And like a dream, many of the buildings show up in different configurations throughout the photos. Or sometimes, the buildings stay put and the backgrounds change.
Visually, this is heading towards the realm of ART. NO PHOTOSHOP WAS USED IN THESE PICTURES. IT’S ALL STRAIGHT FROM THE CAMERA.
It’s the oldest trick in the special effects book: line up a model with an appropriate background and shoot. The buildings are 1/24th scale [ or 1/2 inch equals a foot ].

I can’t imagine the time it takes for that hobby.Gee, I wonder if he could build a 1/24th scale model of our national debt?Nobody else can reduce it.
A 1/24th scale replica of our national would be quite a trick.
Since the current national debt is $13.7 Trillion. Our model maker would only need to cover 60 yards worth of a football field with 8ft. tall stacks of hundred dollar bills.

Seems unfair. They can amass massive debt with a few clicks of the computer, yet the dang undo option under edit is always grayed out.
I saw a little 5 minute special on this photographer on FOX news one night, was really neat. That black and white first photo is fantastic.
Thank you so much for link Steve. =)
I wish I saw the special. If you go to his Flickr page, he has a ton of great photos.
Steve, I’ve not ever heard of nor seen this man’s work before. Thanks to you, I’ve been perusing his Flickr album and finding superlatives to fit how his photos make me feel escape me. So, just for brevity’s sake, here goes… WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!
I’ve been having a stress-filled day at work (am still here late on a Friday night, but am sneaking in some Speedy Gonzalez online time). This post of yours transported me away from the icky Obama “here and now” for a short while. Thanks for the “time machine” scale photos and learning something new about photography and 1/2th scale models. Oh, and thank you for the link, good buddy… linky love rocks!
That is the best description of the last couple of years I’ve read yet!
I’ve been in a nostalgic mood for a long time.
Oops – should be 1/24th scale models. Fingers slipped…
This is very cool Steve. It’s amazing how these pictures came out. Thanks for the link my friend.
Not a problem John.
These pictures are really something else.
Thanks for the link, Steve. I appreciate it.
You are so welcome.
