Friday Night Links: The 1/24th Scale Model Edition

This is really cool:

What started out as an exercise in model building and photography, ended up as a dream-like reconstruction of the town I grew up in. It’s not an exact recreation, but it does capture the mood of my memories.

And like a dream, many of the buildings show up in different configurations throughout the photos. Or sometimes, the buildings stay put and the backgrounds change.

Visually, this is heading towards the realm of ART. NO PHOTOSHOP WAS USED IN THESE PICTURES. IT’S ALL STRAIGHT FROM THE CAMERA.

It’s the oldest trick in the special effects book: line up a model with an appropriate background and shoot. The buildings are 1/24th scale [ or 1/2 inch equals a foot ].

Now, on to the links.

Don’t look now Ms. Charen, your PDS is showing.

Republican establishment elites, such as Mona Charen at National Review Online, are working overtime to put down any uprising from from the unwashed masses.

Ms. Charen has published a hit piece on Sarah Palin that is almost worthy of inclusion at the HuffyPo. Almost, since Ms. Charen actually said “Palin has many strengths. I admire her fortitude and her principles.”

That being said, the rest of her column is a veritable Smörgåsbord (the umlauts add a little flair) of spin and condescension.

After the 2008 campaign revealed her substantive weaknesses, Palin was advised by those who admired her natural gifts to bone up on policy and devote herself to governing Alaska successfully. Instead, she quit her job as governor after two and a half years, published a book (another is due next week), and seemed to chase money and empty celebrity.

The 2008 campaign? The 2008 campaign is all on McCain. He was a awful candidate from the word “go.”

Resign the governorship? She was being financially ruined by politically motivated (and frivolous) lawsuits.

Published a book and chased empty celebrity? This is Mona acting like a jealous high school girl rather than substantive thought. And, Ms. Charen wasn’t finished displaying her inner sixteen year old.

Speaking of television, have you watched “Dancing with the Stars”? Calling the show cheesy would be too generous. Perhaps the former governor should not be blamed for the decisions of her adult daughter. Yet there in the audience we see Sarah and Todd Palin, mugging for the camera and cheering on their unwed-mother daughter as she bumps and grinds to the tune of “Mamma Told Me Not To Come.”

After Mona finally stops reliving her high school traumas, she becomes a ‘green’ Republican establishment hack as she recycles the same party ‘wisdom’ that gave us John McCain, Presidential candidate.

She is wildly popular with a swath of the Republican electorate. And, as a conservative woman politician told me, political consultants (who get paid the big bucks, win or lose) will doubtless descend upon her with game plans showing how she can win in Iowa and then cruise to the nomination. Maybe. But the general election would be a problem, since 53 percent of independent voters view Palin unfavorably along with 81 percent of Democrats, according to a recent Gallup poll.

It is painfully obvious that the Republican establishment is first and foremost concerned about preserving their power and their influence. Returning our nation to its Constitutional roots and advancing conservative principles … Not so important for the GOP establishment.

The Science Is Settled: UN Official Admits Climate Policy Is About Wealth Redistribution And Not Global Warming

Ottmar Edenhofer, a leading member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel, let the cat out of the bag. Via The Blaze:

(EDENHOFER): First of all, developed countries have basically expropriated the atmosphere of the world community. But one must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy. Obviously, the owners of coal and oil will not be enthusiastic about this. One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole.

Yep, the UN is all about wealth redistribution and they have been working toward this goal for a long time:

In 1989 Maurice Strong began preparations for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (“The Earth Summit”). The IUCN had a major role in organizing the conference. [Ref.5]. Strong Stated: “It is clear that current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle-class … involving high meat intake, consumption of large amounts of frozen and ‘convenience’ foods, ownership of motor-, numerous electric household appliances, home and workplace air-conditioning … expansive suburban housing … are not sustainable.” In the months leading up to the 1992 Rio conference, Strong (a Canadian who maintains his primary residence in the United States), made various statements against the middle class of the industrialized world. He declared that “the United States is clearly the greatest risk” to the world’s ecological health. This was so, he said, because, “In effect, the United States is committing environmental aggression against the rest of the world.”

Global warming is such a scam.

Visa: Prefers ‘Holiday’

Visa prefers ’Holiday’ over Christmas on the United States:

VISA GIFT CARDS: THE PREFERRED HOLIDAY GIFT

It’s that time of year again, when many consumers will be challenged to find the perfect gift for everyone on their holiday lists. And no wonder it’s a challenge – according to the Visa 2010 Holiday Gift Giving Survey, 42 percent of consumers still have at least one unopened or unused gift sitting in the back of their closet from the last holiday season; Nearly as many (38 percent) admit to returning at least one gift from last year, and 28 percent admit to re-gifting at least one of their holiday gifts from last year.

Yet in Singapore, with their predominantly non Christian population (Buddhist 42.5%, Muslim 14.9%, Taoist 8.5%, Hindu 4%, Catholic 4.8%, other Christian 9.8%, other 0.7%, none 14.8) Visa prefers Christmas and sponsors Christmas decorations.

Go figure.

Scary Graph: S&P predicts house prices to fall another 7% to 10% through 2011

Via Calculated Risk:

Standard & Poor’s analysts believe home prices will drop between 7% and 10% through 2011 …

“Low mortgage rates …influence on home buying activities has been limited due to the weak housing market and a lack of demand,” S&P credit analyst Erkan Erturk said. …

Prices will continue to be pressed down as long as the market works through a backlog of distressed properties that remains elevated.

Don’t plan on selling your home anytime soon.
