“All the cold and snow… It’s caused by global warming”

As the Eastern United States prepares for another strong winter storm, the environmentalists are blaming the latest blast of cold and snow on… Global warming.

How ‘scientists’ can say cold weather is caused by the entire planet warming with a straight face is truly astounding.

Scientists have established a link between the cold, snowy winters in Britain and melting sea ice in the Arctic and have warned that long periods of freezing weather are likely to become more frequent in years to come.

An analysis of the ice-free regions of the Arctic Ocean has found that the higher temperatures there caused by global warming, which have melted the sea ice in the summer months, have paradoxically increased the chances of colder winters in Britain and the rest of northern Europe.

The findings are being assessed by British climate scientists, who have been asked by ministers for advice on whether the past two cold winters are part of a wider pattern of climate change that will cause further damaging disruption to the nation’s creaking transport infrastructure.

This last paragraph is key. Government officials are asking the climate ‘scientists’ (who’s lifeblood is government grants to study the climate) if the last two cold winters are part of a global warming trend, allowing them to call this a crisis.

And the climate scientist are happy to oblige. They are not about to risk their steady stream of government funding by saying no.

Politicians love global warming. It allows them to claim that there is a crisis that only more government can solve. And they have scientist in their pockets who will back up the claim.

The United States government, like most governments, is using global warming to create all kinds of new, exciting taxes and regulations that have very little to do with the actual environment. These new taxes and regulations are more about wealth redistribution and other social engineering projects. Ottmar Edenhofer, a leading member of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel, has said so himself:

First of all, developed countries have basically expropriated the atmosphere of the world community. But one must say clearly that we redistribute de facto the world’s wealth by climate policy. Obviously, the owners of coal and oil will not be enthusiastic about this. One has to free oneself from the illusion that international climate policy is environmental policy. This has almost nothing to do with environmental policy anymore, with problems such as deforestation or the ozone hole.

When you actually look at global warming, the only true statement about it is this:

Concept Car: The 2016 Lotus Elan

I’ve always had a soft spot for British Sports Cars.

Via Autocar.co.uk:

Sports car manufacturer Lotus has released new images of its core-model line-up, all of which will be introduced to the market by 2016.

The pictures, revealed by the company on its Facebook page, show the new Elan, Elise, Esprit and Elite in a number of picturesque Hollywood locations. The company shot these at the same time as the LA motor show.

Here is the 2016 Lotus Elan concept:

A message in a bottle delivered to a Confederate general during the American Civil War has been deciphered, 147 years after it was written.

In the encrypted message, a commander tells Gen John Pemberton that no reinforcements are available to help him defend Vicksburg, Mississippi.

“You can expect no help from this side of the river,” says the message, which was deciphered by codebreakers.

The text is dated 4 July 1863 – the day Vicksburg fell to Union forces.

The small bottle was given to the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia, by a former Confederate soldier in 1896.

The College Education Bubble Continues Its Expansion

If you read Ace Of Spades, you would’ve seen this yesterday:

Via Instapundit comes this damning statistic on the value of a college education these days:

The Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP) has unearthed what I think is the single most scandalous statistic in higher education. It reveals many current problems and ones that will grow enormously as policymakers mindlessly push enrollment expansion amidst what must become greater public-sector resource limits.

Here it is: approximately 60 percent of the increase in the number of college graduates from 1992 to 2008 worked in jobs that the BLS considers relatively low skilled—occupations where many participants have only high school diplomas and often even less. Only a minority of the increment in our nation’s stock of college graduates is filling jobs historically considered as requiring a bachelor’s degree or more.

So basically all the money that many college students (and their parents) have paid/borrowed for a college degree was wasted. They paid $60,000+ just to qualify for essentially high school entry-level jobs.

However, if you are a regular reader of motorcitytimes, you would’ve known about this trend July 4th, 2010- Even Recent College Graduates With Advanced Degrees Finding A Tough Job Market

It’s a bit ironic when you think about it. The mostly liberal educational institutes push a college education as the only way to get ahead in the job market while their liberal policies are crushing the economy.

Or in August- Obama: Folks Need A Degree

What Obama and the liberals will create is a type of credential inflation (as opposed to monetary inflation) where an increasing number of college graduates will be chasing a finite number of jobs. This will cause many employers to require a college degree needlessly for jobs that at one time did not require a degree. Furthermore, employers will start requiring Masters for jobs that today only Bachelor’s Degree.

Of course, if Obama’s plan is realized, the real winner in all this will be the Colleges who will see a surge in enrollment and a nice profit.

Or in October- Over 317,000 Waiters and Waitresses Have College Degrees

Remember how Obama said “folks need a degree?” It turns out that many people have degrees and they end up under employed.

I’m just saying…

Wednesday Night Quick Hits: The Rocket Edition

Congress is mandating a heavy launch system that NASA doesn’t want:

Right in the middle of all this opportunity, the US Congress has decided that not enough money is being spent. It is mandating, apparently against the wishes of NASA and the Administration and without interest from any potential user, building a new launch vehicle by 2016—an overly optimistic, earlier-than-needed date. It appears that the result of the fiscal year 2011 budget deliberations in Congress will be to mandate for NASA to begin development of a rocket capable of delivering 130 metric tons to orbit, and prescribing that it uses the shuttle core stage and solid rocket motors.

But who is the customer? What are the requirements? What is the mission? If we have, or soon will have, four ways to get humans to low Earth orbit already, isn’t that enough for the present? Heavy-lift capability isn’t needed until we have heavy-lift requirements. Starting down the development path before those requirements are defined is a textbook prescription for wasting money. Not only will money be wasted, but it will undermine the existing Air Force and commercial options. America might repeat the perilous mistake of 1979–80: putting all human-to-space eggs in one not-yet-built basket.

That’s our Congress, pouring our money down the drain. Again.

Way to go Jenny! Michigan’s first population decline in 100 years.

What Does ObamaCare Mean to You?

Obamas’ buddy, Hugo Chavez, is working to acquire Iranian missiles that can reach the United States:

The Iranian move to place medium range missiles in Venezuela – which may not be the impetus behind the actions by Brazil and Argentina – clearly threatens every nation within the missiles’ range. Chavez’s close relationship to the world’s principal sponsor of terrorism isn’t new, but it is a quantum leap in escalation of his enmity to America and his threat to South American democracies.

The 1962 Cuban missile crisis was the closest the United States came to a nuclear war. With Soviet medium range missiles in Cuba, capable of carrying nuclear warheads to any American city, JFK’s demands that they be withdrawn were accompanied by the threat that we would remove them ourselves. An Air Force U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down over Cuba raising tensions close to war. A naval blockade of Cuba was about to engage and turn back a Russian convoy when the Russians backed down.

Chavez’s Venezuela was, for a time, Castro’s Cuba on steroids. His new “socialist” revolution is bankrupting the nation, but Chavez is working diligently – with Iranian and Russian help – to do what his idol, Fidel, failed to do.

Ultra Fast Camera Enhances Understanding Of High Explosive Detonation:

With the development of such detonation systems, diagnostic techniques capable of accurately characterising detonator functionality are required.

Application note 14 describes how a SIM8 Ultra Fast Camera running at 1 million frames per second (1360 x 1040 pixels per frame) with 500ns exposures and front lighting was used to record the detonation of high explosive driven liner using a EBW detonator. Initial timing for the detonator and camera were generated using timing from digital delay generators.

Additional synchronization of precise delays to start of frames and flashes were achieved using internal camera timing generators with nanosecond accuracy. Framing data is presented covering the 7.5?s recording period of interest enabling clear diagnosis of how the high explosive driven liner detonates.

Space Gear: Sneak Peek Of Upcoming Smithsonian Show

Via NYT:

The spacesuits will get their due next spring, in a traveling exhibition of full-size photographs and X-ray images organized by the Smithsonian. (Most of the suits — especially their rubber components, which have become brittle over the decades — are too fragile to be displayed.) Last month, a few of the people who know most about spacesuits gathered at the museum for a panel discussion about the design decisions and trade-offs that went into creating these most personal of space-race artifacts.

“A lot of it is engineering,” Joseph J. Kosmo, a senior project engineer with NASA who has designed spacesuits for nearly 50 years, said in an interview. “But a lot of it is art, too.”

I would love to see this exhibition.
