Obma’s SOTU And His Flawed Green Energy Economics

But — but here’s the thing. Even if you doubt the evidence, providing incentives for energy efficiency and clean energy are the right thing to do for our future, because the nation that leads the clean-energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy, and America must be that nation.

Transcript- Obama SOTU

“[T]he nation that leads the clean-energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy.”

Says who?

Any serious economist will tell you that subsidizing green energy is simply a modern version of Frederic Bastiat’s classic “broken window” economic model. Rather than breaking our own window, replacing and it calling this economic activity we are spending vast sums of money replacing existing reliable, functioning and cost effective energy generating capacity with so-called “green energy” (that is less reliable and more expensive). How does this make any sense?

The Cato Institute’s Michael Tanner points out how this picking ‘winners and losers’ is a classic example politicians “fatal conceit:

As the economist F. A. Hayek noted, government’s ability to manage the economy is premised on a “fatal conceit” — politicians’ inability to recognize their own limitations. For example, studies show that not only do government “green jobs” policies create few jobs, but the ones they do create often come at the expense of existing jobs. To cite just one finding: A study by Gabriel Calzada of the Juan Carlos University of Madrid found that every green job created by the Spanish government destroyed an average of 2.2 other jobs, and that only one in ten of the “green jobs” created was permanent. The fact is, if these industries were viable and profitable, the private sector would be rushing to invest in them. The very fact that they require government subsidies demonstrates that they are not the road to future economic growth.

As long as our government insists on picking winners and losers in the market place. And, as long as they continue to divert large amounts of capital from productive areas of the economy to non productive areas, our economy will not return to robust growth.

Another Example of Democrat’s Idea of ‘Investment’

I wonder if all those people who say ‘I will never purchase a Chrysler or GM’  because of the bailout are going to boycott GE appliances?

Obama has packed his administration with Wall Street bailout babies like JPMorgan rainmaker Bill Daley and corporate-welfare queens like General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt, both of whom love “investing in America,” by which they mean “investing in politically connected enterprises such as JPMorgan and GE.” GE derives a great deal of its revenue from government contracts, including a recent Pentagon project described as a “wasteful boondoggle” by the secretary of defense himself. GE lobbied hard to fill the federal swill pail to the brim during the debate over the stimulus, and then began helping itself to the energy subsidies and green-tech goodies doled out thereafter.

Here is an example of GE ‘partnering’ with the EPA to ‘invest’ in our infrastructure:

With this agreement, GE and the U.S. EPA will work with third parties to create a sensor-based, data-driven, and software-assisted system for drinking water distributions. The goal would be to optimize water quality improvement and minimize energy usage. By doing so, the product could assist water utilities and other end users with “greener” distribution network operations and enhanced regulatory compliance.

More taxpayer money down the drain.

Monday Night Quick Hits: The Great Work If You Can Get It Edition

What a gig… Getting paid to be a beer expert.

Why Cicerone?

Anyone can call themselves an expert on beer. But when consumers want great beer they need help from a server who really knows beer flavors, styles and brands. They also want to buy from a place that understands proper storage and serving so the beer they drink will be of the highest quality. Too often great beer is harmed by improper service practices.

In the wine world, the word “sommelier” designates those with proven expertise in selecting, acquiring and serving fine wine. Lately some beer servers have adopted the title “beer sommelier” to tie into the credibility of the wine world. But anyone can call themselves a beer sommelier regardless of knowledge or experience. And while some will be highly skilled, the only way to demonstrate that objectively is through independent testing of knowledge and tasting ability. The Cicerone Certification Program offers that independent assessment and certification so that industry professionals—as well as consumers—can be sure of the knowledge and skills possessed by current and prospective beer servers.

What is a Cicerone?

The word Cicerone (pronounced sis-uh-rohn) has been chosen to designate those with proven expertise in selecting, acquiring and serving today’s wide range of beers. The titles “Certified Cicerone(tm)” and “Master Cicerone(tm)” are protected certification trademarks. Only those who have passed the requisite test of knowledge and tasting skill can call themselves a Cicerone.

The Detroit Free Press: Mock State of the Union Speech

Michael Rosenberg, a sportswriter for Detroit’s more liberal paper, the Detroit Free Press decide to dabble in political satire and what ensues is an oh-so original knee slapper.

I mean, who would ever think to create a mock State of the Union Address for Obama AND use it to take cheap shots at conservatives. Comedic genius.

In a compact 12 paragraphs, including the obligatory “this is a satire wink, wink” opening paragraph and the “Thank you, and God bless America” closing, Rosenberg hit all the left wing comedic high points.

Slam conservatives as birthers- check.

Repeat the line  ”conservatives want to withhold medical care and let people die”- It’s in there.

ObamaCare= Obama cares… Get it… Obama cares and mean old Conservatives don’t.

Lastly, in a masterstroke of originality, Rosenberg decided to take a few pokes at Sarah Palin. Talk about obscure references, who would ever think to make a joke about Sarah Palin being a hunter? For a brief second, I forgot I was reading a Rosenberg column and thought I veered into a Dennis Miller routine about Gary Busey meeting Voltaire at a SEIU rally.

After reading this left-wing comedic ‘gold’, I wonder if the Free Press’s original lefty sports writer / liberal pundit Mitch Albom is hearing footsteps.

An Excellent Example Of Privatization

Prior to 1981, British Telecom was a subset of the Royal Postal Service, and operated by the government. In 1981, the British Telecommunications Act spun off British Telecom from the postal service to the private sector while the Royal Postal Service remained operated by the U.K. government.

Guess what happened next:

Furthermore, this Act and subsequent legislation enabled British Telecom to become the world’s first mass privatisation in 1984 and heralded the emergence of Vodafone, the world’s largest international mobile phone company. Indeed, within 20 years of its incorporation, Vodafone had become the fourth most valuable company worldwide, after such behemoths as Microsoft, Cisco and General Electric.

But what happened to the Post Office’s mail operations? Under the Royal Mail name, they have been becalmed in the public sector, clocking up numerous policy reviews, massive pension liabilities and a sharp decline in mail volumes. In recent weeks, the Royal Mail has been in the news – for the wrong reasons.

To be fair, the weather has been dreadful especially in the lead-up to Christmas, the Royal Mail’s peak delivery period. Yet, the quixotic pattern of recent deliveries for many households seems to be based on the accounting LIFO principle – last in, first out. Hence, many Yuletide greetings cards continue to appear.

A Bill to privatise the Royal Mail is currently before Parliament – at long last. Despite falling letter volumes, the Royal Mail still has tremendous potential. After all, no British undertaking has access to 27 million addresses, where its messenger – the local postman – is almost always very welcome.

Since liberal Democrats are always wanting to copy the Europeans, maybe we can import this idea for our own Postal Service.

Tibetan Warriors Ancient Armor

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has an exhibit of ancient Tibetan arms that looks extremely interesting.  Typically, most people don’t associate Tibet with warriors. However, it seems they have a history of conflict stretching back to the 7th century.

However, this seeming paradox resolves itself when seen in the context of Tibetan history, which includes regular and extended periods of intense military activity from the seventh to the mid-twentieth century. Many excellent examples of Tibetan arms and armor can be found in museum collections today largely due to the fact that various types of armor and weapons continued to be used in Tibet into the early twentieth century, long after they had gone out of use in the West. Other types were preserved for ceremonial occasions, the most important of which was the Great Prayer Festival, a month-long event held annually in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa. Historical armor and weapons were also preserved due to the long-standing tradition of placing votive arms in monasteries and temples, where they are kept in special chapels, known as gonkhang (mgon khang), and dedicated to the service of guardian deities.

The exhibit has an example of a 19th Century Tibetan Matchlock firearm:

A close up of the matchlock:

An early Tibetan iron/gold/silver sword:

Due to the isolated nature of Tibet, many weapons and armor were still being produced using the ancient techniques as late as the early 20th century.

Global Cooling: Climatic cyclic history repeats itself, even if you ignore it.

Alternating periods of warm and cooler weather have been with us as far back as our climate records go. Some of the past cooler periods have been more severe than others, like the Sporer, Maunder and Dalton Minimums.

Dr. Don Easterbrook

I wonder if radical environmentalists will now demand we run our coal-burning plants at full tilt in an effort to increase CO2 in the atmosphere to combat global cooling?

The following is an excerpt from a great article on the subject of global cooling. Via NoTricksZone:

For about 2 decades we have been told to urgently act against unprecedented global warming or else there will be fiery gloom and doom for the world. Yet, the opposite seems to be happening.

The entire planet has stopped warming since 1998 and, more significantly, has started to cool since 2003. Instead of warning people of cooler weather for the next 30 years, there’s still the distinct false sense of expectation of unprecedented warming. People and governments are being urged to go entirely in the wrong direction for the wrong reasons – and at a potentially horrendous price.

Just look at what happened in UK. Ten years ago Britons were told to expect global warming only and that snow would be a thing of the past. Yet the opposite has arrived, three winters in a row. This winter it crippled the entire nation for nearly a month in December 2010.

And a graph illustrating the potential scale of cooling based on cool periods from our recent history.

This graph illustrates the folly of the IPCC prediction of ‘runaway’ global warming.

Remember, the global warming theory can trace its roots to the political and social philosophy of the radical environmentalism. The movement was in search of a scientific theory to support the implementation of their agenda. They found it in global warming.

A closing thought about Earth’s climate from Professor Easterbrook:

We live in a most interesting time. As the global climate and solar variation reveals themselves in a way not seen in the past 200 years, we will surely attain a much better understanding of what causes global warming and cooling. Time will tell. If the climate continues its deepening cooling and the sun behaves in a manner not witnessed since 1800, we can be sure that climate changes are dominated by the sun and that atmospheric CO2 has a very small role in climate changes. If the same climatic patterns, cyclic warming and cooling, that occurred over the past 500 years continue, we can expect several decades of global cooling, followed by continued decadal cycles of global warming and cooling.

An extra big tip O’ the hat goes to Tom Nelson for directing me to this article.

Saturday Morning Quick Hits: The Treehuggers Vs. Starbucks Edition

This is weird. The ultra-libs at Treehugger.com are going after the ultra-libs at Startbucks for introducing the ‘Trenta’ sizes iced drinks:

Canada’s National Post has a great infographics department, and comes up with this clever comparison of an average human stomach to Starbuck’s new 916 millilitre Trenta Cup, that is creeping up on the Big Slurpee. (1.18 litre).

According to Reuters, the cup will be available only for iced coffee, iced tea and iced tea lemonade drinks in the United States and drinks will top out at 230 calories. That certainly differentiates them from their competition.

I guess the treehuggers are upset that Starbucks is engaging in Capitalism (i.e. selling things they think people will want).

John 5 vs. Junior Brown: Sugarfoot Rag

I found these two videos of two great guitarists Junior Brown and John 5 playing the same song, Sugarfoot Rag.

Both guitarists perform the song at warp speed. But, the more interesting thing is how each artist put his individual spin on the song.

Junior Brown, approaches the song from the Country music style and adds a Blues /Rock flair. Detroit’s very own John 5, approaches the song from the Rock / Metal style and adds a Country- Blue Grass twist.
