Bill Clinton and U2 singer Bono: Doing their part to save the Irish economy

Bill Clinton and U2 singer Bono were recently in Ireland doing their part to ‘save; the Irish economy. Not surprisingly, Bill Clinton sounded more like an Occupy Wall Street loon rather than a Rhode Scholar and former President of the United States:

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Saturday told Ireland’s Prime Minister and the cream of the country’s diaspora that he would host a summit in New York to help boost investment in the euro zone struggler.

A veteran of Europe’s financial crisis, Ireland gathered a mixture of corporate leaders, actors and comedians in Dublin this weekend to discuss ways of accelerating their homeland’s recovery and rebuild its reputation abroad.

While Ireland’s booming export sector and strong record of attracting foreign investment is building a fragile recovery, Clinton told business leaders and politicians they could do more and that he would help them do so at an unspecified date.

“I think the American diaspora can do even more. I may be talking against my country’s interests here but American companies have $2 trillion in cash reserves that they have not yet committed to invest in the United States,” Clinton told a packed hall in the in the plush surroundings of Dublin Castle.

There’s money there. I think you ought to target the ones that you know are rolling in dough. These are people who are sitting on money. They know you’re a competitive country and they know they can trust you.”

Spoken like a true shakedown artist.

And speaking of artists, shake down or otherwise, Bono is willing to go on the road and “do what it takes” to help Ireland recover from their economic crisis (caused by the Irish governments ever increasing spending binge). Bono promised to take the show on the road to encourage more investments in Ireland.

Clinton wowed the audience of heavy hitters when he offered to host a similar forum in New York next year to attract investment into Ireland.

Now Bono has offered to do his bit as well after addressing industry leaders drawn from the Irish Diaspora at the government sponsored event.

“I’m ready to work for this country. I’m ready to work for this Taoiseach (Prime Minister), I would love to go on the road and tell people in India to take President Clinton’s suggestion or wherever,” declared Bono.

Of course, Bono and his fellow band mates moved their corporation out of Ireland to Holland. For tax purposes. But, Bono still thinks Ireland is a good investment for everyone else.

Oh, BTW, you can trust Bono with your donations to his anti poverty initiatives as well.
