Fat Taxes: Another bad European idea waiting to cross the Atlantic

Remember, most bad ideas that start in Europe,  find their way over here:

Easy on the cheddar, chubby! Don’t even think about eating those fries, fatty! Do I even have to mention the profiteroles, porky? Are these merely playground taunts? Worringly, they increasingly echo the voice of governments worldwide.

Owing to the rise of so called ‘fat taxes’, authorities are taking an ever-more active part in what their citizens digest (and what comes out of their wallets, of course). In the last few months alone, Hungary, France and Denmark have all implemented their own ‘fat tax’. And whilst, as it stands, no gendarme will be confiscating your next banana-split, authorities, in their paternalistic wisdom, are increasingly frowning upon foods deemed undesirable.

Take Denmark, for example: a range of fatty foods, including even milk and butter, will be subjected to a tax if their saturated fat content is above 2.3%. The price of a pack of butter, for example, will increase by 45% due to the tax. Therefore, so it is thought, those selfish souls who indulge themselves on fatty foods will buy tofu and lentils instead: hey presto, obesity problem solved!

For liberal governments, it’s a win-win. They get a new ‘revenue stream’ to play with and they get to exercise more control over its citizens.

Occupy Wall Street crowd angry at overpaid CEO’s and bankers, while U of M President raked in over $783,850 last year

The more I watch the Occupy Wall Street malcontents, the more I’m convinced this is nothing more than a contrived movement orchestrated by committed leftists.

Most of the protesters are complaining that ‘bankers’ and CEO’s of evil corporations excessive compensation are hurting the average citizen. Many college graduate protesters are complaining that they have run up extravagant student loans and wan’t them forgiven (as if they were forced into taking out those loans).

According to their demands at the outset, student loans debt forgiveness is a top concern for the protesters.

But the funny thing is, while they are directing all their ‘anger’ at big business (and unconvincingly at crony capitalism) they are missing one of the biggest target’s for protest. It combines the crazy cost of college and the crony capitalism they claim to despise.

Overpaid college administration at PUBLIC Universities.

Coleman, who was the highest paid president of a United States public university when she took her post as president in 2002, has slipped in the rankings for the second consecutive year. Last year, Coleman ranked as the fifth highest-paid public university president and in 2007 she was the fourth highest-paid executive among public universities.

For the last fiscal year, Coleman’s total compensation package from the University came out at $783,850. The compensation package includes $553,500 in base salary, $100,000 retention bonus, $75,000 in deferred compensation, $24,500 in retirement pay and $30,850 in supplemental retirement pay.

In addition to her compensation, Coleman has an expense account for business-related operations and travel. She is also provided with a car and is given full use of the historical president’s house at 815 South University Avenue.

Coleman’s salary is determined by the University’s Board of Regents who vote on the matter after an annual review process led by the Personnel, Compensation and Governance Committee of the Board of Regents.

In the 2009 fiscal year, Coleman received a 4-percent raise, increasing her base salary by about $21,000.

I mean, if you want to complain that college is too expensive, don’t blame Wall Street.

Bill Clinton and U2 singer Bono: Doing their part to save the Irish economy

Bill Clinton and U2 singer Bono were recently in Ireland doing their part to ‘save; the Irish economy. Not surprisingly, Bill Clinton sounded more like an Occupy Wall Street loon rather than a Rhode Scholar and former President of the United States:

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Saturday told Ireland’s Prime Minister and the cream of the country’s diaspora that he would host a summit in New York to help boost investment in the euro zone struggler.

A veteran of Europe’s financial crisis, Ireland gathered a mixture of corporate leaders, actors and comedians in Dublin this weekend to discuss ways of accelerating their homeland’s recovery and rebuild its reputation abroad.

While Ireland’s booming export sector and strong record of attracting foreign investment is building a fragile recovery, Clinton told business leaders and politicians they could do more and that he would help them do so at an unspecified date.

“I think the American diaspora can do even more. I may be talking against my country’s interests here but American companies have $2 trillion in cash reserves that they have not yet committed to invest in the United States,” Clinton told a packed hall in the in the plush surroundings of Dublin Castle.

There’s money there. I think you ought to target the ones that you know are rolling in dough. These are people who are sitting on money. They know you’re a competitive country and they know they can trust you.”

Spoken like a true shakedown artist.

And speaking of artists, shake down or otherwise, Bono is willing to go on the road and “do what it takes” to help Ireland recover from their economic crisis (caused by the Irish governments ever increasing spending binge). Bono promised to take the show on the road to encourage more investments in Ireland.

Clinton wowed the audience of heavy hitters when he offered to host a similar forum in New York next year to attract investment into Ireland.

Now Bono has offered to do his bit as well after addressing industry leaders drawn from the Irish Diaspora at the government sponsored event.

“I’m ready to work for this country. I’m ready to work for this Taoiseach (Prime Minister), I would love to go on the road and tell people in India to take President Clinton’s suggestion or wherever,” declared Bono.

Of course, Bono and his fellow band mates moved their corporation out of Ireland to Holland. For tax purposes. But, Bono still thinks Ireland is a good investment for everyone else.

Oh, BTW, you can trust Bono with your donations to his anti poverty initiatives as well.

These are really funny Libertarian quotes from The Whited Sepulcher:

  • If you can’t see a Broken Window without thinking of a dead French economist, you might be a Libertarian. (Hmmm…. I’ve posted a time or two about broken windows)
  • If you own one of the rare Milton Friedman action figures, you might be a Libertarian. (Own a Milton Friedman action figure? No.)

Be sure to read the rest, they are terrific.

AP cheers continued EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative spending while neglecting true purpose of initiative

AP environmental writer spills a ton of virtual ink extolling the virtues of Obama’s wild spending on his Great Lakes Restoration Initiative while ignoring the initiative’s true purpose.

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is just like every other Obama (or Democrat / Leftist) ‘initiative’ and can be summed up in two words.

Wealth. Redistribution.

If you are a regular reader of MCT, you have read about Great Lakes Restoration Initiative over a year ago:

In a related move, Obama has unleashed another bureaucratic layer, in the EPA, to oversee the implementation of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative:

This Action Plan – including the funding and other policy tools that will be used to leverage its outcomes – is intended to realize our goals: that the fish are safe to eat; the water is safe to drink; the beaches and waters are safe for swimming, surfing, boating and recreating; native species and habitats are protected and thriving; no community suffers disproportionately from the impacts of pollution; and the Great Lakes are a healthy place for people and wildlife to live.

[N]o community suffers disproportionately from the impacts of pollution” is another way of stating the EPA is planning to use its regulatory power to implement Environmental Justice in the Great Lakes region. An example of how this will work is outlined on page 20of the Action Plan.

Now, not only does the EPA have the power to regulate carbon dioxide, the gas all people exhale, the EPA through the National Ocean Council has the authority to regulate the usage of the Great Lakes, its adjacent waterways and the oceans with John P. Holdren pulling the strings.

You can’t trust the MSM to tell the entire story.

Hope and Change: The Shocking Costs Of Environmentalism

Like I’ve been saying all along…

Via IBD:

Yes, the environmentalists’ bill is now coming due. Some cost hikes are unavoidable. The electrical grid, like other infrastructure, needs to be updated and improved.

But the costs due to “tougher environmental regulations” are avoidable. They are the product of choices, not all of them sound.

Trying to scrub and eliminate carbon dioxide emissions, for instance, is counterproductive. CO2 is not a pollutant. It’s a naturally occurring gas necessary for life on Earth.

But the environmentalists are extreme in their loathing of man-made carbon emissions, and their agenda is supported by many policymakers.

Remember when a 2008 presidential candidate said if he’s elected his cap-and-trade policy would bankrupt anyone who tried to build a coal-fired power plant on his watch?

Occupy Wall Street and their bouillabaisse of views

A lot of media types are spending a lot of time spinning the idea that the Occupy Wall Street crowd is “a bouillabaisse of views representing the many groups that have signed on, and their demands are unclear.

This is bogus.

The common thread running through the bouillabaisse of views is the desire for ever expanding government. They are all big government leftists.

What is really amazing is the notion that the Occupy Wall Street crowd fear ‘corporations.’ They act as if a corporation can seize your property (eminent domain), imprison you for not paying your taxes or tell you what you can do with your property (EPA). The only organization that has this kind of power if the the government. And now, thanks to ObamaCare, the government will be able to withhold medical care if they so choose and there will be nothing you can do about it.

Via PowerLine (where I shamelessly lifted this graphic):

where do people who don’t like corporations work? Do they seriously want to turn the clock back by centuries–it would take some research to figure to how many–to a world in which the only forms of business organization are sole proprietorships and partnerships? And who do they think designs, manufactures and distributes the products they use? Elves?

Clueless on display for all to see…
