“When I view all beings not as special creations, but as the lineal descendants of some few beings which lived long before the first bed of the Cambrian system was deposited, they seem to me to become ennobled.”
Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species (1859)
When you stop viewing all beings as special creations, you get this:
There is not much that is liberal (or enlightened) about modern liberalism.
It’s good seeing the concept of Federalism being discussed again (surprisingly by a Romney adviser) in political circles:
For much the same reason, competition among governments leads to better governance. In choosing where to live, people can compare public services and taxes. They are attracted to towns that use tax dollars wisely. Competition keeps town managers alert. It prevents governments from exerting substantial monopoly power over residents. If people feel that their taxes exceed the value of their public services, they can go elsewhere. They can, as economists put it, vote with their feet.
The argument applies not only to people but also to capital. Because capital is more mobile than labor, competition among governments significantly constrains how capital is taxed. Corporations benefit from various government services, including infrastructure, the protection of property rights and the enforcement of contracts. But if taxes vastly exceed these benefits, businesses can — and often do — move to places offering a better mix of taxes and services.
Not only does Federalism create competition between local governments, it allows for more decisions being made at the lowest levels of government, pushing more decisions closer to home.
Federalism is a brilliant concept in that it’s the most effective way for groups of people to organize and operate. In government, business, military or even in team sports, the most effective organizations push decisions to the lowest levels of that organization possible.
A good example of pushing decisions to the lowest level is football. Some of the most important decisions in a game are the “tackle calls” made by offensive lineman. The linemen need to quickly adjust blocking schemes just prior to the snap to pick up defensive stunts, changes in alignment and blitzes. At that point in the game, there is no time for the coach to change the play. The decisions must be made by the players on the field.
In much the same way, a Federalist government pushes more decisions closer to home. This allows for more effective decisions being made by the people most affected by the decisions rather than having decisions made by the bureaucracy in Washington.
After nearly four years of Obama, people understand the importance of Federalism.
Liberal propaganda thinly disguised as serious research.
Via Freakonomics:
It seems that the stereotype of the “thinking liberal” may have some truth. New research (summarized in the BPS Digest) finds that “low-effort” thinking about a given issue is more likely to result in a conservative stance. Here’s the abstract:
The authors test the hypothesis that low-effort thought promotes political conservatism. In Study 1, alcohol intoxication was measured among bar patrons; as blood alcohol level increased, so did political conservatism (controlling for sex, education, and political identification). In Study 2, participants under cognitive load reported more conservative attitudes than their no-load counterparts. In Study 3, time pressure increased participants’ endorsement of conservative terms. In Study 4, participants considering political terms in a cursory manner endorsed conservative terms more than those asked to cogitate; an indicator of effortful thought (recognition memory) partially mediated the relationship between processing effort and conservatism. Together these data suggest that political conservatism may be a process consequence of low-effort thought; when effortful, deliberate thought is disengaged, endorsement of conservative ideology increases.
In other words, if you don’t think too hard, you ‘re a conservative.
Right… Liberals are deep thinkers.
Only a high-effort thinking liberal could design (and proclaim be a champion of) a Ponzi-scheme such as Social Security while simultaneously fighting “tooth and nail” to allow for abortion under all circumstances. Even a low-effort thinking conservative understands keeping the Social Security Ponzi scheme rolling requires an increasing population paying into the system. Murdering a sickening number of unborn children through the liberal sacrament of abortion cripples their number one entitlement: Social Security.
Furthermore, why would any high-effort thinking liberal teacher support a union and movement that will go to the mat supporting abortion?
Would anyone call this the embodiment of high-effort thinking?
Even liberal ‘economic’ policies demonstrate a distinct lack high-effort thought.
Not too long ago, #OWS losers (poster children of liberalism) Tweeted their outrage at ‘corporate greed’ on their Apple iPhones, while sipping Starbucks lattes purchased using their parents debit cards. Is this really high-effort thinking?
So-called low-effort thinking conservatives embrace the Founding Fathers ideals of limited government, liberty, the individual, the concept of Federalism, religious and economic freedom. Conservatives also understand our Founders were students of history and based our Constitution on ideas and principles that have stood the test of time.
History tells us the Founders were correct.
Contrary to conservatives, high-effort thinking liberals embrace central planning government, class warfare, wealth redistribution, devaluing human life & unions. In short, today’s liberal is embracing Marxist principles.
If liberals would stop their high-effort thinking and study actual history (not Social Studies) they would discover that Marxism leads to communism. And communism doesn’t work. Ever.
Maybe our intrepid authors should swallow their liberal pride and re-think their papers thesis.
The rich will do anything for the poor but get off their backs.
“What drags our entire economy down is when the benefits of economic growth and productivity go only to the few,” Obama said.
Who says Obama isn’t a Marxist?
Obama lives it up on the basketball court Easter Sunday:
The “Shoot for Strength” activity took place on the White House basketball court, where Daryll “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins and legendary shooting guard Mitch Richmond joined Globetrotters’ Herb Lang, Fatima Maddox, Jacob Tucker and Wun Versher to conduct drills with kids. The drill consisted of the kids doing pushups every time the professional players or President Obama scored.
In his first three shots he went 0 for 3. He missed seven shots before sinking his first.
The kids switched with the shooters, and the president dropped to the ground to do some pushups.
“Somebody saw me cheating on my pushups,” the president joked.
Way to set an example Barack. It takes quite a man to cheat in a contest with kids.
While Obama cheated on the kids, the United States economy continues to decay:
1. Every fifth man in America is out of a job. Indeed, black male unemployment is now at the highest rate it has ever been since the U.S. government began collecting statistics on the subject in 1972. Just 56.9 percent of black men over the age of 20 are now working. Indeed, according to Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), one out of every six African Americans, male or female, are now unemployed.
2. Every seventh person you pass on the sidewalk now relies on food stamps.
3. On the last day of President Bush’s presidency, gas prices were $1.84 a gallon. Today under Obama, the average price of a gallon of gas costs $3.94. Easter weekend in Catalina Island, California, drivers saw prices topping $7 a gallon.
4. In 2006 and 2007, 90% of all college graduates found a job. Under Obama, just 56% of college graduates are able to find a job.
5. More than one in four U.S. homeowners are “under water” or owe more than their homes are worth. The housing crisis has now destroyed $7 trillion in U.S. household wealth. Another 9.5 million homes are still at risk of default, sparking what analysts believe will be a second wave of foreclosures in the months to come.
6. President Obama has increased the national debt more in three years than President Bush did in eight. Under Bush, the debt rose $4.899 trillion in eight years. In three years, Obama has exploded the debt by $4.939 trillion.
7. A record 87,897,000 Americans are no longer in the labor force. When the number of individuals who have stopped looking for a job and/or who are working part-time but desire full-time employment is included–a figure known as the “underemployment rate”–real unemployment stands at 19.1%.
The real unemployment rate is 19.1% and Obama continues to spin rather than man up:
Despite the slowdown in hiring, President Barack Obama says overall job growth has been encouraging.
“Our economy’s now created more than 4 million private sector jobs over the past two years and more than 600,000 in the past three months alone,” he said. “But it’s clear to every American that there will still be ups and downs along the way and that we’ve got a lot more work to do.”
Obama cheats on kids and lies to the American people. What a guy.
BTW, the creepy picture on the basketballs Obama used while cheating, are reminiscent of the creepy American flags his zombies… I mean supporters… flew a few weeks ago.
Talk about a cult of personality…
According to Eric Holder, you don’t need identification to actually vote. But, if you want to discuss voting rights with Eric Holder or anyone at the DOJ, they want to see your identification.
As we move forward from this pivotal phase, the opposition should continue to take important steps to bring about a transition that is peaceful, inclusive and just. As the leadership of the TNC has made clear, the rights of all Libyans must be respected. True justice will not come from reprisals and violence; it will come from reconciliation and a Libya that allows its citizens to determine their own destiny.
In that effort, the United States will be a friend and a partner. We will join with allies and partners to continue the work of safeguarding the people of Libya. As remaining regime elements menace parts of the country, I’ve directed my team to be in close contact with NATO as well as the United Nations to determine other steps that we can take. To deal with the humanitarian impact, we’re working to ensure that critical supplies reach those in need, particularly those who have been wounded.
Libya isn’t getting much play in the ‘news’ these days, since the mission there is not going all that well.
Via gulfnews.com (UAE):
Having intervened to depose Muammar Gaddafi, the West seems to be dissociating itself from the chaos that has ensued in Libya.
With Libyan oil production back to normal, the ‘Friends of Libya’ have re-invented themselves as the ‘Friends of Syria’, and are focused on that tinderbox instead.Meanwhile Libya careers wildly towards disintegration. The Nato-backed revolution in Libya re-ignited old feuds and rivalries, many of them based on ethnicity, tribal loyalties and long-running vendettas; it has spewed up some new ones too.
There are dozens of heavily-armed, warring militias, fiercely guarding their various territories which they run like mini-fiefdoms.
The interim government, the National Transition Council (NTC), is unable to disarm the militias although it has tried to buy their loyalty. Last month the NTC set up a recruitment centre in an old police academy in Tripoli, paying fighters from local brigades hefty sums to patrol the capital. The plan back-fired when gunmen from a rival militia attacked the academy, chased everyone away in a hail of bullets and took the money to pay their own men.
Many Libyans are disillusioned with the unelected, Nato-backed NTC, and fear that its leaders are weak and self-interested. They worry that their revolution has been hijacked and that the NTC has failed to establish a stable infrastructure on which to build the new Libya. The NTC includes several men who were either part of, or close to, the old regime and has signally failed to stamp its authority on the post-revolutionary landscape by bringing the principal culprits to trial — including Saif Al Islam Gaddafi.
Of course, the ‘news’ will not hilight anything that will hinder “The One’s” re-election campaign.
Take it away Slow Joe Biden:
“The idea that there’s this overwhelming additional security in the ownership and carrying concealed and deadly weapons… I think it’s the premise, not the constitutional right, but the premise that it makes people safer is one that I’m not so sure of,” Biden said.
The Obama regime will use any excuse (or manufacture one… Fast and Furious) to try turning public opinion away from legal gun ownership.
The good news is, Americans aren’t buying what Obama / Biden / Holder et al. are selling.
“I think it’s time they got by without more help from taxpayers who are already having a tough enough time paying the bills and filling up their gas tank,” the president said. “And I think it’s curious that some folks in Congress, who are the first to belittle investments in new sources of energy, are the ones that are fighting the hardest to maintain these giveaways for the oil companies.”
I have to ask, how , exactly, is raising taxes on oil companies going to lower gas prices?Remember what the brilliant Milton Friedman explained so clearly, corporations and businesses don’t pay taxes, only people pay taxes.
