Sunday Afternoon Links: 2010 The Year We Make Contact Edition

The President addressed a joint session of Congress yesterday. He said he wasn’t gonna back down on the blockade. I don’t know which was scarier, the speech or the Congress cheering it. He evoked Lincoln. Whenever a president is gonna get us into serious trouble, they always use Lincoln.

Quote from 2010 The Year We Make Contact

Via DVD Town:

As it stands, director Peter Hyams created in “2010″ a good, well-made, tightly-knit, nicely-acted science-fiction sequel, yet one that clearly lacks the vision and scope of its illustrious predecessor. Where “2001″ had been all about imagery, “2010″ is all about plot. Be that as it may, however, “2010″ might be a more appealing proposition than “2001″ for some viewers. The sequel has a more conventional story line, a greater reliance on character relationships, and more matter-of-fact explanations for otherworldly phenomena, which could make it more accessible than “2001,” which relied almost exclusively on images and sound to sustain its ideas. Looked at another way, “2010″ is a good piece of entertainment, while “2001″ is a persuasive work of art.

House Dems Will Take a Thumping in November

Intrade odds for Republicans to control the House after the November elections rose today to the highest level in the contract’s history: 58.6% (see chart above). When Obama took office in January 2009, the Intrade odds were only 15% that the Republicans would control the House in 2010, and those odds have consistently risen and have been trading above 50% since late June.

Blockbuster Stores Predicted To Disappear in 2011

No more Blockbuster stores In 2011?

Now Blockbuster is a movie ghost town. After the onslaught of Netflix and Redbox, the end has been near for a while. The company has managed to hold on, just barely, but financial types are now expecting the end to come in 2011.

Blockbuster is near the top of 24/7 Wall St’s new list of brands expected to disappear by the end of 2011. The company is currently considering Chapter 11, and it lost another $65 million last quarter. 6,000 stores are still left, but 24/7 believes that the only life left in the company is the kiosk/delivery rental methods. “Its brick-and-mortar business is dead.”

The first video stores appeared on the scene in 1977 and 34 years later the continued advances in technology has put the video store effectively out of business.

Tuesday Night Links: The Austin Powers Edition

Austin Powers “Shaguar” E-Type on eBay:

A 1970 Jaguar E-Type that was used in the 1997 movie Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and dubbed the “Shaguar” is up for sale on eBay for $59,900.

Actor Mike Myers, in the role of Austin Powers — the goofy British spy who favored crushed-velvet suits and Beatle boots — spoofed the more serious James Bond movies. Powers, whose middle name was “Danger,” was cryogenically frozen in the 1960s and resurrected to save the world. The movie’s trailer described him as “a swinger in a square world.”

The eBay auction of the Austin Powers car stands in whimsical contrast to the upcoming auction of James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5, which is scheduled to be sold this fall by RM Auctions and Sotheby’s and could command in excess of $5 million.

Movie Music: Trevor Rabin

Went to the movies today and saw Prince Of Persia (it was pretty good) and one of the previews before the movie was The Sorcerers Apprentice:

Watching the trailer I was really liking the music and it turns out that Trevor Rabin, one of my favorite musicians, is responsible for the music.

Trevor Rabin joined the band Yes in the 80′s. Via Trevor Rabin.net:

Accepting an invitation from industry heavyweight John Kalodner, he moved to Los Angeles to play in an early version of what became Asia. Trevor bowed out of that situation to record demos for a planned solo album, but his plans changed when his demos came to the attention of former Yes bass player Chris Squire. Squire was looking for a guitarist for a new band he was putting together, and Trevor’s demos became the basis for the new group Cinema. As the album neared completion, Jon Anderson joined the band and a new incarnation of Yes was born. The Yes “comeback” album 90125 became by far the biggest-selling of the group’s career, launching the group’s only #1 single, Rabin’s “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” and only Grammy, “Cinema”.

In 1989 Trevor released his fourth solo album, “Can’ t Look Away”. After a decade of success, including four albums and four worldwide tours, Trevor parted ways with Yes. Immediately he was offered a film score, the outcome of which proved prolific. Since then he has composed the soundtracks for mega-budget Hollywood movies, enhancing the performances of stars like Will Smith, Nicholas Cage, Denzel Washington and Samuel L Jackson. Trevor has scored ten films for Jerry Bruckheimer and with over $2.4 billion in ticket sales has attested to the success of their partnership.
