Sunday Morning Links: The “Tooth Picks, Bug Eaters, Pukes and Suckers” Edition

This is so cool. Via Strange Maps @ Big Think.

The map’s link to Sus domesticus [1] is via the company that produced it: H.W. Hill & Co. This Decatur, Illinois outfit were the sole manufacturers of Hill’s hog ringers, Hill’s triangular rings, calf and cow weaners, stock markers &c. On the map, we see one pig per state or territory, each with one of H.W. Hill’s trademarked triangles through its nose.

But that is as far as product placement goes. Even though it was printed in [H.W. Hill’s] own advertising department, the map is a deft example of oblique advertising – a clear-cut case of 19th-century viral marketing.

For its main attraction were not H.W. Hill’s markers, weaners and rings. It was mailed out – for five one-cent stamps – as a tableau entitled: “Nicknames of the States”. It’s always interesting, and perhaps a little titillating, to see what names you’re being called by others, and to know how to return the mockery [2]. And it helps that all involved are portrayed as that most unloved of domestic animals, the pig.

For us, the map holds one extra appeal: in the almost 130 years since its publication, the nickname landscape has shifted somewhat. A few have remained popular, but many have fallen into disuse. Curiously, next to the sobriquets that are insults or compliments, a few are merely descriptive, and some states and territories don’t even get one. Somehow, that feels like the worst option.

Included in this post, are close ups of the more interesting areas taken from a high res version of the map downloaded from the Library of Congress.

CBS News Catching up to MCT on the Green Energy Fraud

Finally, even CBS News can’t provide cover for the green energy fraud:

Solar panel maker Solyndra received a $528 million Energy Department loan in 2009 – and went bankrupt last year. The government’s risky investment strategy didn’t stop there, as a CBS News investigation has uncovered a pattern of cases of the government pouring your tax dollars into clean energy.

Take Beacon Power — a green energy storage company. We were surprised to learn exactly what the Energy Department knew before committing $43 million of your tax dollars.

Documents obtained by CBS News show Standard and Poor’s had confidentially given the project a dismal outlook of “CCC-plus.”

Asked whether he’d put his personal money into Beacon, economist Peter Morici replied, “Not on purpose.”

“It’s, it is a junk bond,” Morici said. “But it’s not even a good junk bond. It’s well below investment grade.”

As pointed out last October here at MCT, the Beacon Power scheme is 1890′s technology.

Flywheels? Seriously?

What is it with the eco-fanatics fascination with Victorian era technology? The are in love with electric cars, windmills, solar (photovoltaic cells) panels and now flywheels.

One of the first patents to discuss energy storage using a flywheel dates back to 1894

Green energy and global warming will go down as some the all-time greatest scams.

An extra big tip O’ the hat to Ace for the CBS link.

Pravda: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton laughed at news of Gaddafi’s death

Via Pravda:

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton learned about the death of Muammar Gaddafi via an SMS message. Clinton was staying in Kabul when she learned the news. The moment, when she was given a cell phone, was filmed by CBS NEWS as Clinton was getting ready for an interview.

Clinton received her BlackBerry from an assistant. Having read the message about Gaddafi’s capture, she exclaimed: “Wow!”

The US Secretary of State looked happy. She and the CBS reporter laughed about the death of the Libyan dictator. She paraphrased a well-known phrase by Julius Caesar and said: “We came, we saw, he died!”

Yep, this is smart diplomacy in action…

Scary Graph: S&P predicts house prices to fall another 7% to 10% through 2011

Via Calculated Risk:

Standard & Poor’s analysts believe home prices will drop between 7% and 10% through 2011 …

“Low mortgage rates …influence on home buying activities has been limited due to the weak housing market and a lack of demand,” S&P credit analyst Erkan Erturk said. …

Prices will continue to be pressed down as long as the market works through a backlog of distressed properties that remains elevated.

Don’t plan on selling your home anytime soon.

Wednesday Night Quick Hits: The Inflation Edition

Via BoingBoing:

Back when Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Montgomery Ward were battling it out over who would be the analog version of Amazon, Sears offered increasingly ambitious and specialized catalogs. One of their most ambitious projects was mail-order homes, inspired by success of The Aladdin Company. Last year, Cory blogged about Thomas Edison’s similar prefab concrete home venture. But Sears Modern Homes had huge success with their wood-framed homes from 1908 through the Great Depression. Their cheapest model was $107 in 1908 (about $2,000 today). Unlike a lot of modern prefab, these were made to last; you can still find these homes here and there around the country.

Over the last few days, the Intrade pay-to-play investment exchange shows the contract for Democratic control of the Senate dropping below 50 percent for the first time. In fact, as of this writing, the contract is at 46 percent. For perspective, the contract was 95 percent in early 2010. Last summer, it was 75 percent.

Why Michigan Conservatives Need To Get Out And Vote

Michigan is truly a wonderful state and has many things going for it. Beautiful parks, geography, lakes, forests and four actual seasons.

Pumpkins @ Long Family Orchard, Farm & Cider Mill

We also have a strong tradition of innovation, manufacturing, engineering and design.

We make things.

However, our states strong traditions have been under continuous assault from the progressive left for over 60 years. Progressivism has infested business, education and our state government.

We conservatives need to begin the roll back of the progressivism in our state and create a more conservative environment. An environment that is pro-economic growth, more individual freedom and an environment that is rooted in personal responsibility and not an all intrusive nanny state government.

The progressive nanny state ideology has even taken root in the Michigan GOP as evidenced by the selection of Rick Snyder as the Republican candidate for Governor.  Snyder is campaigning on many of the same failed policies that our current Governor, Democrat Jennifer Granholm (the worst Governor in America) has been championing for the last eight years.

This is very disappointing to conservatives across the state.
