Is Granholm Trying To Destroy Michigan?
This has got to be the single dumbest idea yet:
Approval of eight coal plants now in the pipeline will be delayed at least several months while the state reviews alternatives, and some of them won’t be built, the governor and her aides indicated. Alternative energy played a key role in the governor’s address, and she hopes to help rebuild the state’s economy, in part, by nurturing a “green energy” industry here.
She hopes? You can’t power an economy on hope. You can’t heat your home with hope. Does she want rolling blackouts in August, when all the air conditioners kick in and there isn’t enough power? I can see it now…Relocate your business to Michigan, we hope to keep the lights on.
Granholm proposed a so-called “45 by 20″ plan, meaning the state would reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels — including coal — used to generate electricity by 45 percent by 2020. Michigan currently imports all of its coal, 96 percent of its petroleum and 75 percent of its natural gas, officials said.
“Instead of spending nearly $2 billion a year importing coal or natural gas from other states, we’ll be spending our energy dollars on Michigan wind turbines, Michigan solar panels, Michigan energy-efficient devices, all designed, manufactured and installed by Michigan workers,” Granholm said.
Honestly, windmills and solar panels?
Think about it, windmills have been around for hundreds of years. Why did we move away from them? Because they only work when the wind is blowing and they are not very efficient. You can make the thing 300 feet tall out of carbon fiber, with a computer designed blade profile, gear them to the nth degree and they still won’t spin unless the wind is blowing. Solar panels in Michigan…Need I say more.
The fact is the technology is not there and won’t be there in 2020. In 2020 we will be scrambling to build coal or nuclear power plants because Michigan residents will be paying a fortune on electric bills and our economy will still be in the dumps.
Like I said before, if you ever travel to Mexico and get away from the resorts, take a trip to Reynosa and take a look at how ‘green’ a place like that is. Poor countries do not concern themselves with environmental issues, only wealthy ones that can afford it.
Our Governor needs to get off the politically correct ‘Green’ idea and get with reality.

A bad governor can really hurt a state. Yours is in tune with Our Fearless Leader and his statements about the coal industry. When he said he wanted to put it out of business I thought that might lose him the election. I was wrong.
To answer your opening question… no, that bridge was burned like so many vacant buildings in Detroit, years ago. Looks now like she’s trying to salt the scorched earth to make sure nothing ever grows here again.

Considering it takes 4-6 years SANS any regulatory issues to construct a Nuclear facility, we are going to have serious problems if we do NOT build coal plants and SOON.
Good point Jason.
Estimates indicate that building just ONE new clean-coal plant would create 1,800 construction jobs alone. Building 8, then, would create over 10,000 construction jobs and thousands of full-time jobs in and around the plants after they are completed.
Can we really afford any delay?

The Governor consistently confuses economic development with the religious fervor of environmentalists whose actual objective is to destroy capitalism.
