Japan Will Protect It’s Economy First

Japan is doing the smart thing by not meeting it’s ‘Kyoto Protocol’ targets and is only pledging to cut it’s future CO2 emissions by 8%. Via The BBC:

But Kim Carstensen, leader of the global climate initiative at environment group WWF, said the 8% target represented virtually no advance from the 6% cut that Japan had pledged, under the Kyoto Protocol, to achieve by 2012.

“Prime Minister Aso’s plan is appalling,” he said.

“[It] would mean that Japan effectively gives dirty industries the freedom to pollute without limits for eight years.”

Japan’s annual emissions are currently about 6% above 1990 levels, despite its Kyoto Protocol pledge to make cuts.

Japan and Europe are publicly claiming they will cut CO2 emissions. But, when push comes to shove, they understand this is a game and will protect their economy first. The Europeans plan to cut CO2 emissions by 20% publicly, but many EU countries are rapidly building coal fired power plants to provide the power necessary to grow their economy.
