Alfa Romeo is preparing to redefine its SUV lineup with the all-new 2027 Stelvio, introducing stunning design, cutting-edge hybrid and electric powertrains, and ambitious hopes of reviving its U.S. fortunes.
The second-generation Alfa Romeo Stelvio is set to debut later this year and arrive in North American showrooms for the 2027 model year. First launched in 2018, the Stelvio marked Alfa’s bold entry into the SUV market. Although initially celebrated for its distinctive style and sharp handling, the model has since aged among stiff competition. Now, Alfa Romeo aims to recapture excitement, offering not only its trademark Italian flair but also the brand’s first hybrid and fully electric SUV variants.
Alfa Romeo’s reestablishment efforts in the U.S. market have struggled since its 2017 return, with only 8,865 vehicles sold last year. The Stelvio, once its best-seller, recently fell behind the Tonale after a 41 percent sales drop. As a result, the success of the 2027 Stelvio is vital for the brand’s future growth in North America.
Built on Stellantis’s STLA Large platform—the same architecture underpinning the latest Dodge Charger and electric Jeep Wagoneer S—the new Stelvio will support hybrid, fully electric, and traditional gasoline powertrains. The platform allows for larger vehicle dimensions, meaning the Stelvio will likely expand from its current 184.6-inch length, offering increased interior space and a more commanding road presence.
Powertrain options will be a major highlight. Alfa Romeo confirmed hybrid and electric versions without specifying whether the hybrid will be a plug-in or conventional setup. Enthusiasts anticipate that a future Stelvio Quadrifoglio hybrid could incorporate the new 3.0-liter Hurricane twin-turbo inline-six engine, delivering up to 550 horsepower, outperforming the current Quadrifoglio’s 505 hp. Non-performance models might adapt the Tonale’s plug-in hybrid system or an updated 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid.
The fully electric Stelvio is expected to share some DNA with the Dodge Charger Daytona EV, including a 400-volt system and dual-motor setup producing up to 670 horsepower. However, Alfa Romeo’s engineers are likely to refine the driving experience, ensuring the Stelvio feels uniquely Italian rather than just a rebadged muscle car.
Competition will be fierce. In addition to traditional rivals like the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Genesis GV70, the new Stelvio will also face off against electric newcomers such as the Porsche Macan EV, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Polestar 3. Alfa Romeo must stand out not only through design and performance but also by addressing lingering concerns about reliability, particularly critical as the brand ventures into electric territory, where customers expect flawless technology.
Production of the new Stelvio is slated to begin in 2026, with the model arriving in time for the 2027 calendar year. During the transition, the current Stelvio will remain available until late 2026. Pricing is expected to rise, with hybrid models likely starting around $55,000 and electric variants edging closer to $70,000.
The 2027 Alfa Romeo Stelvio isn’t just another model update—it represents a crucial opportunity for Alfa Romeo to finally gain a meaningful foothold in a highly competitive market. If the brand can deliver a perfect mix of style, performance, electrification, and reliability, the Stelvio could very well become a turning point in Alfa Romeo’s modern story.
