BMW is preparing to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) industry with its highly anticipated Neue Klasse platform, which is expected to redefine the company’s approach to electrification. Set to launch shortly, Neue Klasse is being positioned as BMW’s most ambitious electric overhaul yet, integrating groundbreaking advancements in battery technology, motor efficiency, and overall performance.
The Neue Klasse platform, which BMW is labeling as its “Gen6” EV architecture, represents a significant evolution from its current Gen5 technology that powers models like the iX. Unlike its predecessor, which relied on prismatic battery cells, the Gen6 platform will transition to cylindrical battery cells similar to those used by Tesla. These new 4695 and 46120 cells—named for their 46 mm diameter and varying heights of 95 mm and 120 mm—will enhance energy density by 20 percent. This innovation allows for extended ranges of up to 559 miles per charge, a considerable leap forward for BMW’s EV lineup.
Additionally, BMW has redesigned the battery chemistry to reduce reliance on expensive materials such as nickel and cobalt, cutting overall battery production costs by up to 50 percent. This, combined with an 800-volt architecture, will improve charging speeds by 30 percent. In optimal conditions, the Neue Klasse EVs will be able to add 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes, positioning BMW’s charging capabilities on par with leading industry standards. The automaker will source its battery cells from CATL and EVE Energy in China but will assemble them in-house. To ensure global production resilience, BMW is constructing six battery manufacturing plants worldwide, including a facility in Woodruff, South Carolina, to cater to the U.S. market.
Beyond battery advancements, the Neue Klasse platform will also introduce next-generation electric motors. BMW has confirmed a range of configurations, including single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and high-performance three- and four-motor setups. The automaker will retain its Externally Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM) technology but refine it for greater efficiency, reduced noise, and enhanced compatibility with the 800-volt system. These rear-axle motors will be available in power variants ranging from 268 to 402 horsepower. Additionally, the front axle may feature an optional Asynchronous Motor (ASM), optimized for regenerative braking, with outputs of either 161 or 241 horsepower.
With a potential combined output exceeding 1,200 horsepower in top-tier models, BMW is pushing the boundaries of EV performance. Furthermore, cost efficiency remains a key priority, as the redesigned motors are expected to reduce drivetrain expenses by 20 percent while also achieving a 10 percent weight reduction. These cost-saving measures bring BMW’s EVs closer to price parity with their internal combustion engine counterparts, although the company acknowledges that full parity remains an ongoing challenge.
One of the most notable innovations within the Neue Klasse platform is BMW’s new “Energy Master,” an integrated power supply and battery management system. Situated on top of the battery pack—an area BMW calls “the penthouse”—this system will regulate both high-voltage propulsion and low-voltage auxiliary functions. The modular design not only improves energy efficiency but also simplifies maintenance and repairs, as technicians can address issues without having to replace entire battery packs.
BMW is also prioritizing global supply chain stability. With shifting market dynamics, trade uncertainties, and potential regulatory changes, the company is taking proactive measures by ensuring localized production in key regions. This strategic decision will allow BMW’s U.S.-bound Neue Klasse models to qualify for federal incentives under domestic manufacturing policies while mitigating potential supply chain disruptions.
Although BMW has made significant strides in improving weight efficiency, the company admits that the overall weight of Neue Klasse vehicles will not see a drastic reduction. However, engineers emphasize that the new powertrain’s 10 percent weight decrease will contribute to better overall efficiency, ensuring that future BMW EVs maintain performance without excessive weight gains.
The first production model based on the Neue Klasse platform is expected to debut later this year, marking the beginning of BMW’s new electrification era. With innovative battery technology, cutting-edge motors, and a strategic approach to cost efficiency, BMW’s next generation of EVs is poised to be a game-changer in the highly competitive electric vehicle market.
