Mazda Unveils the Spirit Racing Roadster 12R

Mazda has launched the Spirit Racing Roadster 12R, a special high-performance version of the MX-5 Miata. Limited to just 200 units and available only in Japan, this car is a tribute to Mazda’s motorsport history and showcases the brand’s focus on speed and precision. While it promises an exciting driving experience, fans outside Japan are left wishing they could get their hands on it.

The 12R is built for performance. Its 2.0-liter engine has been upgraded with a modified cylinder head, custom camshaft, and redesigned intake and exhaust systems. Mazda hasn’t shared exact power figures, but the improvements mean it will likely perform best at higher speeds, making it perfect for track use.

The car’s suspension and braking systems have also been enhanced. It comes with Bilstein-tuned dampers, a stronger tunnel brace, and Brembo ventilated brakes for better handling and control. Lightweight RAYS wheels, inspired by Mazda’s Super Taikyu race cars, keep the car agile and responsive. Together, these upgrades make the 12R a car that’s ready to take on corners with precision.

Aerodynamics plays a big role in the 12R’s design. It features a carbon fiber aero kit that reduces drag and increases downforce, improving stability at high speeds. The unique Aero Gray paint and darker aero accents give the car a sleek, race-ready appearance, while subtle decals add to its sporty vibe.

For those who miss out on the 12R, Mazda is offering two other models: the Spirit Racing Roadster and the Roadster RF. Both use the same 2.0-liter engine with 181 horsepower and share upgrades like Brembo brakes, Bilstein dampers, and RAYS wheels. While not as track-focused as the 12R, these models still offer a thrilling driving experience.

Sadly, the Spirit Racing lineup is only available in Japan. Mazda’s decision to keep it exclusive reflects its dedication to honoring its motorsport roots at home. For fans in the U.S., the 12R’s absence is disappointing, especially since the Miata has a loyal following there. The car’s engine upgrades might not meet strict U.S. emissions rules, which adds another hurdle to bringing it stateside.

The 12R reminds many enthusiasts of the R Package Miatas from the 1990s, which were built for track lovers with performance-focused features. A modern version with the 12R’s power upgrades would surely be a hit in the U.S. if Mazda could find a way to make it work.

While the 12R is out of reach for most, it shows why the Miata remains one of the most beloved sports cars in the world. Lightweight, fun to drive, and packed with personality, the Miata continues to define what makes a great roadster. The Spirit Racing Roadster 12R is a celebration of everything Mazda stands for: passion, performance, and a love for driving.

For now, this special car is a dream for those outside Japan, but it’s a reminder of why the Miata’s legacy continues to shine.
